Services

Many students need more support and individual, direct instruction than they receive in school. Because all students’ needs and learning styles are different, a variety of services and learning methods are available at Thriving-Minds. Sometimes a student may need to "fill in the gaps" of a particular skill area such as reading, writing or basic math. Others may need tutoring in a specific subject, like advanced math, foreign languages, or science. And there are those students who really struggle to learn because of a disability or inefficiency in processing. We can help to determine where the problem is, and develop a program to help.

Educational Therapy

Educational Therapy helps students with learning differences and other challenges with a wide range of intensive, individualized interventions designed to remediate learning problems, build skills and use appropriate learning strategies essential to school success. The focus of educational therapy is on the precise needs of the individual client rather than a group of individuals as is often found in school settings.

Support Services Include:
  • Literacy and Reading remediation
  • Written language
  • Math remediation
  • Multisensory approaches tailored to each student's needs
  • Executive functioning skills
  • Processing and memory training

Homework Support and Academic coaching

Learning can be a challenge, but it shouldn't be a battle.

Has homework time with your child become a struggle? Sometimes a child may need a little individual assistance tailored specifically for them. As a parent it can be exhausting when students take hours to finish a single homework assignment, and when parents and children work together, emotions can sometimes take over, creating a difficult and unproductive learning environment. We provide structured subject-area tutoring, organizational support, and essential study-skills instruction. After working with a professional, your child can learn to enjoy accomplishing academic tasks and learn new skills in order to study, organize, and be successful in life.

At Thriving-Minds, we find that once students are given the tools and insights they need to support their unique way of learning, they thrive. Enthusiasm replaces frustration. Confidence replaces low self-esteem. A happy child replaces a miserable one. School performance improves. Parents become less frustrated. The student becomes less discouraged and develops the tools necessary for success.

Study Skills

Thriving-Minds curriculum for developing students’ study skills is carefully structured to build new skills on learned ones, including how to organize time, materials, and information. Our study skills program begins with an assessment of each student's current study habits and a "learning styles inventory". The clinician then uses this information to tailor instruction to capitalize on the student's strengths. Students learn how to find a reading selection's main idea, how to paraphrase, and how to write summaries, reports, and research papers. Clinicians address textbook reading skills, test preparation, and test-taking strategies. Once students master basic study skills, they learn how to apply the newly learned strategies to their current academic studies.

Students learn how to:
  • Find a reading selection's main idea
  • Paraphrase
  • Write summaries, reports, and research papers
  • Improve textbook reading skills
  • Test preparation, and test-taking strategies
  • Organization
  • Time management
This study skills training method is particularly effective for students who:
  • Have difficulty organizing materials
  • Have trouble completing assignments independently
  • Exhibit inconsistent homework quality
  • Have difficulty planning and executing multi-step projects such as research papers
  • Receive poor test grades despite understanding the topic

Social Skills Groups

Socialization is the outcome of connections between people and the cultural context in which shared experiences mediate social environments. Initially children develop these tools to serve solely as ways to communicate needs. When social skills are internalized, they lead to higher thinking skills and cooperative learning. We offer Pre-through Teen girl specific and boy specific groups as well as toddler and early elementary play groups to foster and continue developing social minds.

Our Pre- and Teen groups run for 10 weeks and consist of children between the age of 8 – 10, 11 – 13, and 13 – 15. The focus is on perceptions, friendships, safety, and, our growing body for girls and perceptions, friendships, safety, and, inter-gender interactions for boys.

Our Toddler and early elementary play groups require a 4 week commitment and build upon the fundamental skills of development. These include using our senses of smell, texture, sight, and sound while promoting the development of motor and language skills.
